1892-1895 WORLD TOUR OF GEORGE BULLOUGH

Descriptive text relates to period of visit, i.e. early 1890’s unless otherwise stated.

 BLOG 87 - ALBUM XVIII*
CONTAINS ALL 27 PHOTOGRAPHS

The photographs in this article were collected by George Bullough
and his travelling companion, Robert Mitchell during their 1892-1895 World Tour
and mounted in twenty albums in the library at Kinloch Castle.
Each album measures 14½ x 10¼ inches - Each page 14 x 10¼ inches.
The size of each photograph is given alongside its title as written in the album.
Regrettably Kinloch Castle Library,
on the south-west (ground floor) corner
has two external walls and suffers from high humidity and constant ingress of damp.
The room has also suffered at least one inundation
of water through the ceiling from an overflowing sink in the bathroom two floors above.

“It is crucial to store books and photographs
correctly, to respect their age and vulnerability
to thoughtless handling.
This is especially true
for hand-coloured prints as the colours were only applied to the surface of the photograph, never becoming an actual part of the
resulting image.
Therefore the delicate surface
is prone to scratching, blurring, loss of colour
and crinkling due to high humidity.”

(* Note: Due to miss-labelling of the original albums there is no Album XVIII
but a second album identified as XIV containing coloured photographs of Japan,
this should follow Album XVII which also covers Japan.)

E64  ISHIYAMA, OTSU
Album XVIII   *   Image 1   *   9½ x 7¾ inches

The village of Ishiyama lies along the banks of the Lake Biwa,
the largest freshwater lake in Japan with an area of almost 260 square miles.
Of tectonic origin, the lake, which has a maximum depth of 341 feet,
is one of the oldest in the world dating back at least four million years.
This has allowed a diverse ecosystem of more than one thousand species
to become established including almost fifty native species of fish
and a large number of molluscs.
Lake Biwa is attracts thousands of geese, swans and ducks each year.
The lake was designated a UNESCO Ramsar Wetland in 1993.

Judge not, O Lord, my steps aside at Gay Street in Hong-Kong!
Blot out the wastrel hours of mine in sin when I abode –
Jane Harrigan’s an’ Number Nine, The Reddick an’ Grant Road.”

JAPANESE ROOM OF FUJIYA HOTEL, MIYANOSHITA
Album XVIII   *   Image 13   *   Size 11 x 8½ inches

Opened as the first Western style hotel in Hakone in 1878
the original Fujiya Hotel, so named for its stunning view
of Mount Fuji, was founded by Mr. Sennosuke Yamaguchi
following his purchase of the already well established
two story Japanese style Fujiya Ryokan Inn at Miyanoshita, in the Fuji-Hakone region, a popular spa town overlooking the Haya River valley.
Noted for a series of natural hot springs, the highest,
Ashinoyu being 2,272 feet above sea level.
As the watering sites descend the water cools. Fourth from the top is
Myanoshitan with  a temperature varying between 45 and 59 degrees Centigrade.
