The building extreme left is the Grand Hotel. Adjacent to the clock tower,
built in 1889, is the High Court of Griqualand,
Telegraph and Post Offices. The Cape Town Railway finally reached Kimberley,
Griqualand West’s main city, on 28th of November 1885.
By 1900 the population of the town “was about 28,718,
of whom 12,658 are of European extraction.”
