European rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus,
were introduced to Australia with the First Fleet
which arrived in January 1789.
The subsequent release of twenty-four rabbits for sport resulted
that by 1920 an estimated 10 billion (10,000,000,000)
rabbits roamed across Australia.
This mammalian pest continues to cause enormous damage
by its burrowing causing severe land erosion, and damage to both human, farm animal and native animal food crops.
a fiftieth or 2% of the 1920 figure but still a cause of much concern and a warning about introducing non-indigenous species.

of twenty-eight articles by Mitchell published in the
Lancashire newspaper the Accrington
Gazette in 1896.
